Innovating Underwater Sealing Solutions with Transparent TPU: FCE's Engineering Excellence

Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) is a widely used material in injection molding, known for its softness and versatility in applications like sealing and cushioning. Recently, FCE took on an exciting challenge to create a product designed for underwater sealing, specifically crafted to fit over a PVC pipe housing a flashlight.

The client’s requirements were clear: the product needed to be transparent with a polished base to ensure both effective sealing and optimal light transmission. After discussions, the decision was made to utilize transparent TPU with a hardness of 90A, featuring a three-layer internal structure that serves as a waterproof sealing ring. The exterior was finished with a mirror polish to meet the necessary light transmission criteria.

Given that this product would be exposed to outdoor and underwater conditions, it was crucial to use a UV-resistant material to prevent yellowing over time. Additionally, the internal sealing ring created a challenging undercut, complicating the demolding process. To address these challenges, a specialized mold structure was necessary.

During production, FCE encountered significant demolding issues that led to potential product damage and a temporary halt in production. In response, FCE organized multiple meetings to devise and test various verification strategies. This included evaluating the material hardness, adjusting injection molding parameters, and developing new techniques for extracting the product from the mold.

Through rigorous testing and innovation, FCE selected a suitable material and customized the ejection mechanism and timing. A specially designed extraction tool with unique angles was also created, ultimately achieving a 100% successful demolding rate.
